Depreciation and Amortization (Including Information on Listed Property)

Form 4562 is used to claim deductions for depreciation and amortization, to make the section 179 election to expense certain property, and to report the business or investment use of cars and other listed property. It is attached to the tax return of the person or business claiming the deduction. A separate Form 4562 is needed for each business or activity on the return that requires one.

The form opens in our PDF editor with its own fields ready to type into. You can fill it in without an account; downloading the filled PDF needs a free account. A free account gets 15 credits a day, enough for one form a day.

  • The business/investment use percentage of each item that is also used personally

  • Mileage records for each vehicle (business/investment, commuting and other personal miles) and the evidence that supports the business use you claim

How to fill out Form 4562

  1. Fill in the top of page 1

Enter the name or names shown on your return, the business or activity this Form 4562 relates to, and your identifying number. If you have more than one business or activity that needs Form 4562, complete a separate form for each one.

  2. Part I: section 179 election (lines 1 to 13)

If you have listed property, complete Part V first, as the note at the top of Part I says. Lines 1 to 5 work out your dollar limit for the year; Worksheet 1 in the instructions gives the figures for lines 1, 2 and 3. On line 6 describe each item you elect to expense, its cost (business use only) and the elected cost, leaving out listed property. Line 7 is the listed property amount from line 29. Line 10 is the carryover from line 13 of your 2024 Form 4562, line 11 is the business income limitation, line 12 is your section 179 deduction, and line 13 is the amount carried over to 2026.

  3. Part II: special and other depreciation (lines 14 to 16)

Line 14 is the special depreciation allowance for qualified property, other than listed property, placed in service during the tax year. Line 15 is for property you elect to depreciate under a method not based on a term of years, such as the unit-of-production method; attach a sheet describing the property, the method and the depreciable basis. Line 16 is other depreciation, such as ACRS property (the pre-1987 rules).

  4. Part III: MACRS depreciation (lines 17 to 20e)

On line 17 enter this year's MACRS deductions for assets placed in service in tax years beginning before 2025. Check line 18 only if you elect to group assets placed in service this year into general asset accounts; the election cannot be undone. Section B (lines 19a to 19j) is for assets placed in service during the 2025 tax year under the General Depreciation System, sorted by class from 3-year property to nonresidential real property. Section C (lines 20a to 20e) is for assets placed in service during the 2025 tax year under the Alternative Depreciation System. Each row asks for the basis for depreciation, the recovery period, the convention, the method (200 DB, 150 DB or S/L) and the deduction in column (g); the month and year placed in service in column (b) is entered for residential rental and nonresidential real property (lines 19i, 19j, 20c and 20d).

  5. Part IV: summary (lines 21 to 23b)

Line 21 is the listed property amount from line 28. Line 22 adds line 12, lines 14 through 17, column (g) of lines 19 and 20, and line 21; enter it on the appropriate lines of your return. Partnerships and S corporations leave the section 179 deduction out of line 22 and pass it through on Schedules K-1. Lines 23a and 23b are only for filers subject to the section 263A capitalization rules, for assets in Part III placed in service this year.

  6. Part V: listed property (lines 24a to 41)

In Section A, answer lines 24a and 24b about evidence for the business use claimed, and check line 24c if you own, lease or charter an aircraft. List vehicles first. Line 25 is the special depreciation allowance for qualified listed property, line 26 is property used more than 50% in a qualified business use, and line 27 is property used 50% or less. Lines 28 and 29 carry totals to lines 21 and 7. Section B (lines 30 to 36) records miles and personal use for each vehicle; the form has columns for six. Employers who provide vehicles to employees answer Section C (lines 37 to 41) first: a Yes on any of those lines means Section B is not needed for the covered vehicles used by employees who are not more than 5% owners or related persons.

  7. Part VI: amortization (lines 42 to 44)

On line 42 list costs whose amortization begins during your 2025 tax year: a description, the date amortization begins, the amortizable amount, the Code section, the amortization period or percentage, and this year's amortization. Line 43 is amortization of costs that began before your 2025 tax year. Line 44 is the total of column (f), which goes on the "Other Deductions" or "Other Expenses" line of your return.

After you fill it out

Form 4562 is not filed on its own. Attach it to the tax return it relates to, such as Form 1040, Form 1065 or Form 1120-S, and file it with that return. Carry line 22 to the appropriate lines of your return and line 44 to its "Other Deductions" or "Other Expenses" line. Keep the records you used to figure depreciation, and if you file on paper, check the filing address in your return's instructions on the IRS website.

Signing: Form 4562 has no signature line. It is attached to your tax return, so follow that return's instructions for signing.

Watch out for

  • This edition is for tax year 2025; line 10 asks for the carryover from your 2024 Form 4562. For another tax year, use that year's form from the IRS list of Form 4562 revisions.
  • Do not report listed property, such as cars, in Part II or Part III. Use Part V, and complete it before Part I, because its totals feed lines 7 and 21.
  • Lines 1 and 3 use the section 179 dollar limits for tax years beginning in 2025. Take them from Worksheet 1 in the 2025 instructions, not from another year's form or instructions.
  • If you have more than one business or activity, complete Part I in full only once. The instructions explain how to prepare a separate Form 4562 marked "Summary" for the totals and enter each business's share of the deduction on line 12 of its own form.

Questions about Form 4562

I use the standard mileage rate for my vehicle. Which parts do I fill in?

The note in Part V says that for a vehicle using the standard mileage rate (or for which you deduct lease expense), complete only lines 24a and 24b, columns (a) through (c) of Section A, all of Section B, and Section C if it applies. If you file Schedule C, claim the standard mileage rate or actual expenses other than depreciation, and have no other reason to file Form 4562, report the vehicle in Part IV of Schedule C instead.

Do employees use Form 4562 for a vehicle used for work?

No. The instructions say an employee deducting job-related vehicle expenses, by the standard mileage rate or actual expenses, uses Form 2106. If you file Form 2106, the vehicle information goes on that form, not in Part V.

Do I need Form 4562 if my only amortization began in an earlier year?

Not for that alone. If the amortization (other than research or experimental expenditures) began before your 2025 tax year and you have no other reason to file Form 4562, the instructions say not to file it and to report the amortization directly on the "Other Deductions" or "Other Expenses" line of your return.

Can an estate or trust use Part I?

No. The instructions say an estate or trust cannot make the section 179 election.

Do I list every asset I placed in service in earlier years?

Not in detail, except for listed property in Part V. Their current MACRS deductions go on line 17 as one total, but the information used to figure depreciation, such as basis and method, must be kept in your permanent records.
